The Church of Santa Maria di Pistia in Serravalle di Chienti is an important building of Catholic worship, built in pre-Romanesque times, on the remains of the ancient cathedral of the Umbrian town, located on the border with the Marche.
BACKGROUND
According to legend, the apostles Peter and Paul, in their first years of preaching, passed through the city of Plestia asking for refuge on a cold and rainy night. No one gave them help except a young and lonely woman from whom the two apostles, out of respect, accepted only the bread and not the lodging. Then they went up towards Mount Trella, along the road called via della Spina which connected Plestia to the Umbrian Valley, and when they were far enough away the wrath of God struck the city with a terrible earthquake and a violent downpour that caused the destruction and flooding of the city and the death of the inhabitants.
In the morning, the apostles who saw only a large lake from the mountain instead of the buildings, went back down to preach the divine punishment to the few survivors among whom they met the young woman. A church of Christian worship was then built on the ruins.
