The Sanctuary of Sant'Angelo "de Prefolio" is located at an altitude of 690 to the south-east of Mount Pennino, along an important trans-Apennine transit route, the transhumance road beaten by the sheep that descending from the mountain continued southwards along the Val Sant 'Angelo, the valley that connects the Colfiorito plateau to Pieve Torina.
A semicircular plaque placed on the external façade is adorned with an intertwining motif, of clear Romanesque iconography, representing two lions turning their heads to a cross in the center and biting their tails. It probably refers to the monumentalization of the micaelica cave, built in 1148 by the prior Diotisalvi, with the help of the Duke of Spoleto Federico, Count Alberto, Gisla, others and his people of Lombard descent. In fact, it would seem that the sanctuary was chosen as the burial ground of the count of Prefoglio, Antonio, whose castle was opposite the sanctuary micaelico, and his wife Gisla.
In 1252 the Prefoglio castle was sold to the Municipality of Camerino, and the appointment of a prior to manage the sanctuary began from then until the seventeenth century.
