Between 1371 and 1381 the Da Varano, lords of Camerino, built the castle of Beldiletto in the plain below, a sumptuous and splendid summer residence of the powerful family. In these rooms, richly frescoed, Louis I of Anjou and Amedeo VI of Savoy were hosted in 1382. In 1419, the castle was conquered by Carlo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, fighting with the Da Varano family, who was later defeated by the lords of Camerino, with the help of Braccio da Montone. In 1510, Pope Julius II stayed there with his entire entourage, made up of seven cardinals and 200 horsemen. The same castle of Pievebovigliana, today dominated by the bulk of the church of Santa Maria Assunta, of medieval origin, but restored in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and which contains the Romanesque crypt dating back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, was destroyed in 1528 by the troops of the duchess Caterina Cibo, engaged in dynastic struggles for the control of the Da Varano lordship. Its structure, originally surrounded by a large and deep moat, is quadrangular, with towers in all corners.
