The castle of Sentino was probably built, on commission from the local feudal lords, in the first half of the 13th century. In 1259 the Lords of Sentino favored the Swabians in taking and destroying Camerino; on behalf of Gentile da Varano, captain of the city, after liberating the area, he demolishes the fortifications and the castle. Giovanni di Berardo is defined as the builder of Sentino, since after 1350 he took the destroyed building from its foundations and transformed it into a fortified residence. After the devolution of the Duchy, the fortress of Sentino, which became the direct domain of the Apostolic Chamber, loses its original defensive characteristics and its gradual abandonment determines its rapid deterioration.
