Castello is a hamlet of 113 inhabitants in the municipality of Fiuminata in the province of Macerata.
It is located in the valley of the Potenza river, near the Umbrian border.
It is of medieval origin and retains buildings from the time.
Castello is the ancient seat of the municipality of Fiuminata, moved in 1872 to the hamlet of Massa.
Perched on a rugged slope close to a mountain, it owes its name to its nature as a fortified medieval village; in the highest part of the town there is an ancient lookout tower, in excellent condition.
The ancient name of the Castle was Castri Sancti Johannis (Castel San Giovanni): this name appears for the first time in the historical document Constitutio Sindaci Comuni Camerini ad emendum Castrum Fluminate of the year 1283, in which the Castle is mentioned as already built.
Castle retains its original structure with the access door to the castle, the towers and the surrounding walls.
The country has suffered a significant demographic decline since the war, when many inhabitants emigrated in search of work, especially in Rome, but also across the border (Belgium).
At the beginning of the 21st century, the population increased slightly thanks to immigration from abroad, for example from Romania.
