Current days Matelica stands on the area where the Roman Matilica was located, halfway up the coast along the Esino river. There are numerous evidence related to the Picenes and the early medieval phases. The rural area was rich and organized. Excavations carried out in the Fonticelle area, southeast of the city center, have brought to light the remains of a Roman villa used for a long period of time from the 1st to the 4th-5th century. d. C .: a main room, with three basins covered with marble, a back wall, also with a containment function, and other rooms with mosaic floors. In relation to this archaeological area, the necropolis identified near the cemetery should also probably be considered.
