The Nature Reserve is established with the purpose of:

-> preserving the environmental emergencies present in particular
      - in regional state-owned estates;
      - in the floristic areas "Monte San Vicino" and "Piani di Canfaito" (meadows, woods, rock vegetation);
      - in the Site of Community Importance IT5330015 “Monte San Vicino”;
      - in the special protection area IT5330025 “Monte San Vicino and Monte Canfaito”;

-> preserving biotopes of exceptional geological, landscape and naturalistic interest such as the “Gola di Jana”, “Bocca de Pecu”, “Sasso Forato”;

-> safeguarding established anthropological and archaeological values ​​(caves, ravines and rock shelters inhabited since prehistoric times and where stone tools and tools have been found);

-> preserving all the animal species present and in particular the wolf, the wild cat, the roe deer, the eagle owl, the peregrine falcon, the lanner, the sparrow hawk, the hen harrier, the buzzard, the kestrel, the red woodpecker (minor and greater), the nightjar;

-> conserving habitats suitable for amphibians, both aspects to be protected;

-> encouraging the reintroduction of crayfish;
