In this valley, between Monte San Vicino to the east, the chain of the Sibillini Mountains to the south, characterized by the oddities of the Esino River, lies the production area of the Verdicchio DOC di Matelica. The excellent exposure of the vineyards, the constant ventilation, the brightness and the heat contribute to building an optimal environment for the vegetative cycle of the vine. The skilful work of the producers, aimed at the exaltation of "typicality", together with the use of the most modern winemaking technologies, have brought Verdicchio di Matelica to the highest levels of national enology. Matelica is also the City of Honey. Our honey is collected in the Upper Esino Valley between hills, fields, woods and streams in an uncontaminated habitat; particular is the wildflower honey and the monofloral ones. The true characteristic of the territory is expressed by the "Honeydew of Oak", a much appreciated bitter honey. The cultivation of saffron in these territories dates back to 1300-1400, as described in some notarial deeds found after much research in the notarial archive of Camerino section of Matelica, where saffron sales contracts relating to that period are ascertained.
