The Abbey of Santa Maria di Chiaravalle di Fiastra is one of the most valuable and best preserved monuments of Cistercian architecture in Italy and represents the highest evidence of the presence in the Marche of the Cistercians, who arrived there in 1142 from the monastery of Chiaravalle in Milan. The monks brought with them the liturgical books and work tools. For the construction of the abbey, which began the year of their arrival in the Marche region, the indications of San Bernardo were followed and French architects-monks were used who made use of typical Cistercian architectural styles. On the side of the building stands the monastery which encloses the large brick cloister with low pillars, lowered arches and trussed roof. Of the ancient monastery, the Chapter Hall, the refectory and the dormitory of the lay brothers, the room of the cruets and other rooms are preserved. In the rooms of the cellars of the Abbey, with access from the cloister, the Wine Museum has been set up which exhibits tools and objects used in the past for the processing of grapes.
