It is a small town that rises on a hill between the valley of the Ete Morto river and the Tenna valley in a beautiful panoramic position. The first part of the name derives from San Michele Arcangelo, a saint dear to the Lombards, whose image appears on the municipal coat of arms; the second comes from the location of Sant’Angelo in the Pontano gastaldato, an administrative district made up of the Lombards of the Duchy of Spoleto. Today the town still retains its medieval appearance in a small part due to the castle and its walls which were built in the 11th century.
