The wildlife area was created as part of the project "LIFE NATURE 2002 Conservation of Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata in the central Apennines" in collaboration with the Majella and Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Parks, to strengthen and expand the territory of a species that was threatened with extinction, in implementation of the national action plan for the conservation of the Apennine chamois. On the Sibillini this subspecies was certainly present up to about 3000 years ago and perhaps up to the 16th century. The first pair of Apennine chamois, coming from the Lama dei Peligni wildlife area, in the Majella Park, was introduced into the Bolognola wildlife area in 2006, in order to implement controlled breeding programs, exchanging the breeders with other wildlife areas in order to increase the scarce genetic variability, as well as to give birth to individuals to be reintroduced in nature.
