Fortezza Da Varano di Sefro

Among the terzieri in which the municipality of Sefro was divided there is Sassi (Saxorum), in which between the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth, the Castrum Sefranum was built in a rather central position.This wall fortification with tower, portico and other buildings was used by the population of Sefro, like many others in the surroundings, as a military garrison of defense against any enemies and, in case of attack, performed the function of refuge for the community.Most of the surrounding buildings, despite the renovations of the past years, have ancient features, such as the buildings joined in rows, the narrow streets, the archivolts and several underpasses, which unequivocally insert them into the medieval period.In the period that saw the Da Varano di Camerino protagonists, the Castle was certainly their property and today of this medieval structure, improperly called Torre dei Varano, there remain some remains through which it is still possible to distinguish the original structure.
Currently inside some rooms of the fortress is housed the Museum of Peasant Civilization.
