The plans of Montelago are contained in a suggestive basin, located at about 900 m above sea level and surrounded by Apennine reliefs of limestone composition, which reach 1435 m (Monte Igno). The two floors have the following characteristics: the upper floor has a minimum altitude of 918.2 s.l.m. and covers an area of about 1.1 square km, the lower floor has a minimum altitude of 891.0 s.l.m. and has an area of about 0.6 square kilometers. The origin of the basin is to be attributed to the tectonic activity of recent faults (prevailing Plio-Pleistocene age), located mainly at the eastern margin.
