The Amphitheater of the ancient Augustan colony of Urbs Salvia was built in 81 d.C. in an extra-urban area near the Salaria Gallica.More precise information is provided by two inscriptions found in the area of the building, now preserved in the State Archaeological Museum of Urbisaglia, according to which the structure was built by a certain Lucio Flavio Silva Nonio Basso (senator and general of Tito, a native of Urbs Salvia) and could hold up to 5150 spectators (the arena is 59 meters long and 35 meters wide). The monument has an elliptical shape and is made of cement work with stone cladding.According to tradition, public shows were held here, often bloody and bloody: the famous games between gladiators or the venationes (shows that included hunting and the killing of wild animals). The building appears as one of the best preserved in the Marche and is currently maintained throughout its perimeter up to the height of the first order of steps.
