The fortress was founded in 1020 by Rodolfo di Monaldo III of the Lombard Counts of Nocera, who at that time had jurisdiction over the territory. At the beginning of the thirteenth century it appears to belong to the Cavalca, a delie families of noble feudal lords who owned the most important building structures in the valley. In 1327 it was sold by the last male descendant of the family, Jacobuccio, to Gentile di Berardo Varano di Camerino. With the decadence of the Varanos, all their assets in 1545 passed to the Holy See. The last owners were Lori. Of the ancient structure, in white limestone, the tower and a part of the palatium are preserved: the first was probably built in the eleventh century together with the outer walls, for defensive and military purposes, and reached twenty meters in height. A later phase instead dates back to the palatium, residence of the noble feudal lords, built at different times: a first body was leaning against the tower by the Cavalca in the twelfth century when they probably already lived in the fortress, to equip themselves with a more comfortable residence; at the end of the thirteenth century, on the other hand, dates back to the building in which the access door to the palatium opens, which is the most elegant and best preserved part: you can see the entrance portal with a pointed arch, a single-lancet windows with a trilobe arch and a large room on the ground floor covered by a barrel vault.
