The original church was most likely built at the time of the Counts of Profoglio, Lords of Valsantangelo, between the sec. XII-XIII. The coat of arms of Giulio Cesare and Giovanna Da Varano, Lords of Camerino in the second half of the century, is walled up on the bell tower. It is not clear if it is a bare element or if it was already walled up in the old bell tower. In 1533 the stone tabernacle sculpted in bas-relief was built which is still walled up in the wall behind the main altar. The stone baptismal font was built in 1639. Between the XVII century and the following one, some devotional paintings were made. In 1844 the bell tower was restored. In 1890 the painter Orazio Orazi from Camerino painted the picture of the Madonna Addolorata. In the early years of century XX, the ancient Gothic church was transformed into the current building losing the original stylistic characteristics. The gothic portals and single lancet windows were filled in on the sidewalls, while the windows in the upper part were opened. Bittarelli says that the original church was demolished. On September 26, 1997 a series of seismic tremors began which caused the following damage to the building: failure of the foundations of the side walls. In the second half of 1999 the Services Conference approved the project restoration which included the following works: masonry foundations along all the perimeter walls.
