Piobbico Abbey, originally known as Santa Maria tra i torrenti ("inter rivoira"), as it is located between the Tenna and Tennacola rivers, was founded in 1030, consecrated in 1059 and later dedicated to San Biagio in the fifteenth century.
It stands isolated in a green basin near Piobbico. The church and a farmhouse leaning against the sacred building remain of the monastic citadel. Various local lords sold or ceded to the abbey from the first period of the foundation a vast extension of goods, land and settlers, the collection of tithes and churches.
In the mid-thirteenth century. the monks obtained from the municipality of Sarnano the possibility of building an oratory within the municipal walls dedicated to the Virgin which constitutes the original nucleus of the church of Santa Maria di Piazza.
