Around 1300 AD the populations of the valley floor of the upper course of the Nera river were increasingly exposed to the dangers of raids. To find security and freedom, they decided to unite and found the Castrum Sancti Angeli castle, which they placed under the protection of the archangel Michael.
The medieval origins of Castelsantangelo sul Nera are still visible today in the town plan: the triangular castrum with a square tower (turris capitis), surrounding walls and access doors. From the lookout tower of the castle start the fortified walls which, in some sections, still retain walkways and battlements. In its territory there are the sources of the Nera river and the bottling plant of mineral waters.
